Both plasma and organelle membranes are known to have basal (leak) Na+ permeability, but the molecular basis for the leak and its regulation are poorly understood. We discovered that NALCN and TPCs, atypical members in the Nav/Cav channel superfamily, contribute the basal Na+ conductances on the plasma membrane and endolysosomal membrane, respectively.
