Government extension system has been under pressure in China for being inefficient; lacking clear objectives and incentives; and lacking relevance, though there are about 700,000 extension agents employed and a five-leveled network established.Agriculture university-based extension emerged as a response to the inefficiency and an opportunity to exert its own force and to learn from Americans cooperative extension service.Hot-lines of agriculture experts, consultancy and technical assistance through university periodical van tour, contracted project in certain area, poverty-stricken area in particular are some approaches explored by agricultural universities in China.
