Background Embolization therapy for intracranial aneurysm requires bed rest which increases the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis(DVT).Traditionally, ankle pump motor exercise is used to prevent DVT for the patients with intracranial aneurysm. However,it was reported that DVT still occurred in a small number of patients, even though the ankle pump motor exercise was performed.Lower limb Range-of-Motion Exercise has been used to prevent loss in range of motion and increase range of motion, however, its potency in preventing the DVP is unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of lower limb range-of-motion(ROM)exercises combined with ankle pump motor exercise in patients received embolization therapy for intracranial aneurysm. Methods From May 2015 to July 2016,a total of 178 patients who underwent embolization procedures for intracranial aneurysm were assessed as having high risk of developing DVT and were recruited in this study. All patients were divided into two groups based on the prevention methods they received. Before January 2016,88 patients received ankle pump exercise only,as control group. After January 2016,the lower limb ROM exercise combined with pump exercise were applied to 90 patients,as study group. The incidence of DVT was observed and compared between both groups. Results No DVT was found in study group while 2 cases of DVT occurred in control group after 4 and 5 days of the embolization therapy respectively. Conclusions lower limb ROM exercise combined with ankle pump motor exercise work more effective to prevent the DVT than ankle pump exercise. It reduce DVT rate in patient after the treatment of intracranial aneurysm embolization and also improve the quality of nursing.
