Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is a common sleep-related respiratory disorder. Numerous studies have shown that SAS is an independent risk factor for a variety of diseases and can lead to damage to organs and systems such as heart, brain, kidney and blood. Establishing an ideal animal model of SAS is of great importance for studying its pathogenesis and treatment. At present, domestic and foreign scholars try to use different animals to simulate the pathophysiology of human SAS patients through different aspects, of which rodents are the most commonly used animal model. This article reviews the establishment of rodent SAS animal models and their advantages and disadvantages.
