In cement chemistry, ferrite is one of the important liquid phases for producing industrial clinker. The reactivity of ferrite has not been investigated extensively and it is commonly assumed thatit hydrates slowly;therefore, playing a limited role in cement hydration and strength development. The research work described in this paper found that the hydration rate of synthetic ferrite follows the molecular ratio of the aluminate phase over the ferrite phase. The ferrite hydration rate is 55.6% of the aluminate hydration rate. The hydration rate of industrial ferrite is higher than the hydration rate of synthetic ferrite.Combining the hydration rate by aluminate and ferrite, an equivalent aluminate formula is developed to measure the combined reactivity of aluminate and ferrite.
