In highly exothermic and endothermic reactions, high conductivity catalyst carriers can help to minimize the hot/cold spots and to prevent mechanical-strength and thermal shock limitations, thereby increasing the efficiency. In this context, open-celled foams (Figure 1) are attractive also because of their high geometric surface areas, high void-fraction [1] and high gas/solid heat-and mass-transfer rates [2].However, despite these potential advantages, the application of consolidated catalytic supports in the chemical process industries is still limited to few examples. In fact, most of the literature studies are experimental and theoretical works focused on the evaluation of an overall heat transfer parameter in conditions not representative of an industrial chemical reactor.
