Macrophages represent a diverse set of phagocytic cells distributed in the whole body.They play a central role in a variety of biological events including host defence against pathogens,tissue remodelling,chronic inflammation,fibrosis and cancer.Accumulating evidence indicates the existence of multiple and distinct subsets that exert different biological functions.
