1930年5月,毛泽东同志在《反对本本主义》中指出:你对于某个问题没有调查,就停止你对于某个问题的发言权。1942年5月,毛泽东同志在延安文艺座谈会上的讲话中指出:只有代表群众才能教育群众,只有做群众的学生才能做群众的先生。如果把自己看作群众的主人,看作高踞于“下等人”头上的贵族,那末,不管他们有多大的才能,也是群众所不需要的,他们的工作是没有前途的。1949年3月5日,毛泽东同志在《在中国共产党第七届中央委员会第二次全体会议上的报告》中指出:中国的革命是伟大的,但革命以后的路程更长,工作更伟大,更艰苦。
