兴地塔格为东天山山脉南支脉,位于尉犁县兴地村一带。兴地塔格地区,青白口系发育较好。E.诺林于三十年代通过兴地作过路线地质调查,首次划出区内的震旦系及冰碛层。解放后新疆地质局曾先后作过百万分之一和二十万分之一地质填图,把前震旦系划出爱尔基干群和杨吉布拉克群。1976年高振家等在东库鲁克塔格的帕尔岗塔格进行了较详细的地质调查,将前人划分的上元古界爱尔基干群上部的一套由碎屑岩到碳酸盐岩地层命名为帕尔岗塔格群。首次确定了青白口系的存在。笔者于1981年对兴地以西、以北地区作过短期二十万分之一填图工作,发现有一套产丰富叠层石和核形石的地层,其时代属于青白口纪。
