German chemical giant Bayer has started a new process pilot plant using CO_2 as raw material to make polyurethane from polyols in Chempark Leverkusen, Germany, which will open up a new road for energy saving and emission reduction. Bayer said the CO 2 now needed is from the Niederaussem power plant at RWE Group in Germany and a CO 2 scrubbing unit is installed at a coal innovation center at the plant. If the demonstration is successful, the new process will be put into industrial production by 2015. It is reported that this technology is Bayer and the German government’s education and science departments common research results, while access to the German RWTH Aachen and other research institutions. The total project investment is about 9 million euros, and the German government provides about 55% subsidy.
