(Beijing, November 10, 2014) Today, the theme activity of “Promoting the Disabled to Share the Achievements of Economic and Social Development” was held in Beijing during the 22nd APEC Week of Leaders’ Weeks. The meeting was attended by senior officials from Asia-Pacific economies who are responsible for disability affairs, representatives of the UN system members, representatives of the International Organization for Persons with Disabilities, business representatives and experts and scholars. We note that the World Report on Disability, jointly released by the World Health Organization and the World Bank in 2011, pointed out that the total number of people with disabilities in various parts of the world exceeds 1 billion, accounting for 15% of the world’s total population. Moreover, we also note that there are about 650 million people with disabilities in the Asia-Pacific alone.
