On October 2, 2013, Rennovia announced the development of a new catalyst and process for the production of chemical products from renewable raw materials that has produced the world’s first 100% bio-based nylon 66 polymer. Nylon 66 is a widely used, high performance engineering resin that is especially suitable for the automotive market with its strength, light weight and high temperature performance. Nylon 66 can also be used in fiber applications, including textiles, carpets, industrial fibers and tire cords. At present, more than 270,000 t (6 billion pounds) of nylon 66 (also known as polyamide 66, or PA66) are produced each year from petroleum-derived adipic acid (AA) and hexamethylenediamine (HMD).
