1960年2月2日,正是农历正月初六,正在修筑三门峡水利枢纽工程配套公路的山西平陆县农民三连,为了加快工程的进程,放弃假期,奋战在工地上。饭后,突然发现全连64人中有61人食物中毒,生命垂危。事情很快查清,因为全连64人中只有一人出差在外,除61人中毒外,另外两名就是投毒嫌疑人。大家吃完饭之后,还发现锅底有一块一两三钱重的砒霜没有化开,所以吃饭越晚的人中毒越深。虽然经过急救,灌甘草水,打吗啡针,均没有效。只有注射特效药“二巯基丙醇”才能奏效。但当时找遍山西省临汾、运城各地均无此药。心急如焚的县委书记挂特急电话向首都求救,请求必须在次日凌晨前将特效药品送抵平陆,否则中毒人员就会死亡。为了挽救61名农民的生命,由国家卫生部、北京新特药商店、空军、五洲电料行等单位参加的紧急救援行动拉开了序幕。
