不止一次听人说,《红高粱》与《老井》一样,在国际上之所以获奖,盖因迎合了某些外国人的猎奇趣味——对中国贫穷、愚昧、苦难、屈辱的津津乐道。此论乍听,确有一种可爱而可贵的民族自尊和正气、但仔细想来,未免失之偏颇、幼稚和简单。固然,《红高粱》与《老井》中确有令我们每个人都深感痛心疾首的贫穷愚昧落后,有如那一大片高粱地被践踏蹂躏的民族苦难和屈辱。影片表现了这些,并没有什么不对,也没有什么不好。首先,这是真实——因为一味地美化我们的过去和现在并不能使我们的未来减少一份丑陋的机会。影片正视了这一部分社会存在,正体现了编导者对民族历史及命运忧愤深广的思考和一个艺术家强烈的社会责任感。更重要的是,影片虽体现了愚昧落后,然而愚昧落后在影片中并非基调——基调是为摆脱愚昧、苦难
