2010年世界杯期间,“给力”一词开始成为网络热门词汇,后来也被收录进《现代汉语词典(第6版)》中。刚开始是因日本搞笑动画《西游记:旅程的终点》汉语配音版悟空的一句配音台词“这就是天竺吗,不给力啊老湿”而流行,表示有帮助、有作用、给面子的含义。21世纪,随着网络时代的快速发展,世界讯息传播秒速更新、网民群众交流互动频繁、多元文化的碰撞经常让网民脑洞大开,网络新词汇层出不穷。为了适应新时代沟通需要,各国官方词典也会与时俱进对文字加注新意,纳入有代表性的新词汇。
