以往研究对中文的“义生文外”“言外之意”和英语中的“implicature”implication“等概念范畴不加限制地通用、换用,换句话说,研究者在未曾厘清这些概念体系的来龙去脉之前便将西方当代理论套用在刘勰和中国既有研究的头上,值得关注。本文首先揭示刘勰的”义生文外“概念与中国语言学”言外之意“概念的相关性。为了这个研究目的,我们首先探讨了作为”义生文外“概念核心要素的”隐秀“观。我们的分析说明,刘勰的”义生文外“概念有两个要点:第一,它属于”言外之意“的范畴,与言内之意相对应,第二,它的内涵直指隐秀论,而且隐与秀是”义生文外“的两个典型特征,由于它们一体两面的性质,可以说,”隐秀“是”义生文外“的具体体现和外在表征。其次,我们研究了中国的”言外之意“概念与西方的”implicature“”implication“概念的异同,澄清了目前学界对这两个术语之间相互关系的误解或模糊界定。研究发现,不仅中西不同语境下,中文的”言外之意“与英文中的”inplicature“”implication“不能画等号,即便同处汉语语境下的”义生文外“与”言外之意“概念也不能画等号。这既凸显了中西专业术语背后理论系统的支点不同,也说明即便在汉语话语体系中,不同的时代、不同的著作在处理某些核心概念时也并非完全一致,而是各有特定的支点。了解这些支点之间的承继关系与时代变迁是我们进行学术研究的重要任务之一。
