中国、蒙古、土耳其、中亚被西方音乐学家称之为“五声音阶大中心”。但是,在这个中心内,同在五声调式框架下,不同民族、不同地域的人们创造的五声旋律却是千姿百态,呈现出多样化的音乐风格。这是因为“调式是音乐思维的重要基础,但调式逻辑对旋律构成来讲只不过是制约音活动的基本规律,这规律并不能代替或者完全说明具体在音乐中的风格特征,因为在这同一基本规律上可以产生种种风格不同的音乐”。
