On December 11, 2001, China formally acceded to the WTO and started to fulfill its promise of opening up its banking sector in an all-round way. How foreign-funded banks market their products to China and how Chinese-funded banks should respond to them are all of great concern to senior government officials, members of the banking industry and the media . I. The main body of foreign banks that compete for market share with Chinese banks is the foreign bank branches in China. Foreign banks in China can be divided into foreign bank branches and foreign-funded corporate banks. By the end of 2001, there were 177 foreign-funded banks operating in China, including 158 branches of foreign banks and 19 foreign-funded corporate banks. The strength of the foreign bank’s parent bank determines that a foreign bank branch in China is a major market share competitor of a Chinese bank. 1. The negative balance of assets of foreign-owned banks in China is much larger than that of foreign-funded ones.
