According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, there was an increase of 1.3 million people without medical insurance from 1989 to 1990, bringing the total number of people without medical insurance to 34.7 million. Of the 1.3 million uninsured people that were added in 1990, 77% were men, 32% had annual incomes of more than 50,000 U.S. dollars, and 74% had household incomes of more than 25,000 U.S. dollars. Only 9% of people live below the poverty line. In a variety of occupations, there are a considerable number of doctors, engineers, teachers, university professors, pastors and other professional people without insurance, but all members of the National Assembly and judges have joined the insurance. The situation was even worse in 1991, with about 40 million people without insurance, reflecting a serious economic recession in the United States.
