In May 1991, a new science-based exam started in more than 150 secondary schools in the UK. When it came out, it was opposed by educators and even students. This new test was designed by a panel appointed by the British government two years ago. It costs about two million pounds and plans to promote it to all secondary schools nationwide starting next year. The critics hold that this test is completely out of school teaching practice, not only “too simple” but also overlooks the basic knowledge of the natural sciences. For example, instead of examining the basic laws of physicochemistry, the test questions asked students to answer questions such as how to dispose of rubbish, how to brew beer, and why a city should have its own airport.
