Four field trials were conducted in the Netherlands using small wind tunnels to directly measure the volatile ammonia applied to different types of manure on pasture surfaces. The ammonia nitrogen lost is often more than 40% of ammonium nitrogen applied within 6 days after application. Ammonia nitrogen losses were highest for poultry manure (up to 83%) and for air-dried poultry manure (21%). Ammonia nitrogen (36-78%) lost from application of pig slurry is usually larger than cow slurry (41%). In most cases, total ammonia losses are up to 80% or more within 48 hours of administration.
