The Great Gatsby profoundly portrays people’s life and ideas in the Jazz Age, as well as the degenerate spirit under the cover of money and pleasure and the disillusionment of the American Dream. Gatsby, the protagonist in the novel, is to realize his “American dream ” - in an attempt to replace old love through fortune and social status, finally paying the price of life. There is a basic narrative structure in this novel: searching - finding - losing. Tracing to Gatsby - Finding - Lost Their Dreams leads us to three typical images: tragedy, legendary heroism, and loneliness. The tragic image is based on the historical background of “Jazz Times” where everyone is pregnant with “American Dream.” Gatsby’s legendary heroes and loneliness are clues to the “green light” symbolizing the American dream and elaborated in a more compact narrative structure such as “chase-lose”.
