IDF战斗机是台湾自行研制的多用途轻型本土防御战斗机(Indigenous Defense Fighter),1982年开始设计,1988年12月10日原型机(FSD)出厂,次年5月试飞后,后又生产了3架.1991年7月12日,第2架单座原型机(78-8002)在台中外海坠毁.1992年1月开始先导生产10架,交空3大队7中队(“翔鹰”中队)试用.原计划生产250架,自美、法同意售台战斗机后,减至130架.该机主要缺点是发动机推力不足,速度及机动性能均达不到设计要求.台空军曾在美加雷特公司的帮助下,实施IDF性能提升计划,发展改进型ADF战斗机.
