Needs analysis is a relatively new topic in foreign language teaching and research. In China, little is known about it; it is even rare for researchers to study it. In this article, the author firstly gives a clear definition of “student needs analysis”, and then elaborates its production - the promotion of communicative teaching and the complementarity of the two - needs analysis to provide a theoretical basis for teaching communicative approach. The third part talks about the scope of “need analysis ”, concentrates on the training plan of foreign language teachers in middle schools, and elaborates on the relationship between supply and demand of training units and employing units in this part.
