据中国保监会网站统计,截至2007年底,中国内地共有保险公司109家,保险代理公司1684家,保险经纪公司357家,外资代表处139家。作为金融业的主要构成部分,截止到2007年第三季度,银行业和保险业的总资产为53万亿,其中保险业总资产只有2.795万亿,占银行业和保险业总资产的5.2%,只相当于中国工商银行资产的三分之一。截至2007年9月底,全国银行和保险业的从业人数为550万,其中,保险从业人数为240万,占银行和保险从业人员总数的43%。用43%的从业人员创造了5.2%的金融资产,近年来发展迅猛的中国保险业效益并不高。
