已经证明多级机油可以降低机车发动机的燃油消耗,而本试验的目的则是探明它是否还可以降低机油消耗。将 SAE 20W—40多级机油和 SAE40单级机油分别用于两台EMD SD40—2型机车型(装用16—645E3型柴油机),在正常的线路运行中进行比较。按阶乘试验矩阵的顺序,两台机车要调换机油,以区别机油的影响。用油深监控技术和金属示踪稀释技术分别得出两种机油消耗测量结果,两种测量结果均表明多级机油有明显效果。对中等铁路负荷循环运输估计可降低机油消耗15%。
Multi-stage oil has been shown to reduce the fuel consumption of locomotive engines, and the purpose of this test is to determine if it can also reduce oil consumption. SAE 20W-40 multi-stage oil and SAE40 single-stage oil were used on two EMD SD40-2 locomotive models fitted with 16-645E3 diesel engines for comparison during normal line operation.
