According to public reports, in the 1990s, the number of Indian diamond cutters was estimated at 600,000 to 800,000. Based on the annual quantity of finished diamonds in India and the speed with which these precious stones are processed, we estimate that there are about 400,000 full-time cutting masters in India (mainly in modern factories) that typically polish about 750 million diamonds a year. Overtime estimates of the number of cutters in the open literature may include part-time cutters in 600,000 home-based handicrafts, some of which cut an average of only one diamond per day and only about 200,000 full-time cutters. Based on the total amount of polished diamonds in India in the mid-1990s and the estimated average size (2.5pt or 0.025ct), a hypothetical diamond product size was proposed. We hypothesize that finished drills weighing about 80% and 96% of the total are less than 10pt (0.01ct). Indian finished diamonds are 3pt (0.03ct), accounting for about 42% of the weight, or about 65% (about 500 million) of the total.
