“Neo-martial novel ” refers to a class of crime novels that were popular in Britain in the early 19th century and characterized by their legendary criminal descriptions. It has inherited a lot of elements from the gothic fiction and historical legend of the 18th century. It also uses the suspense and reasoning to pave the way for the later rise of detective literature and becomes an important part in the development of criminal literature . Because of its fictionalization of criminalization and its ambiguity in ethical positions, novels of neoclassicism have long been regarded by critics as representatives of literary junk. However, with the continuous deepening of the study of criminal literature, its artistic value and its status and contribution in the history of British literature also began to be re-recognized.
