湘潭市四中校办工厂,是在毛主席《七·三○指示》、《五·七指示》的光辉照耀下,由两台旧老虎钳、一把破剪刀起家的。从一九七○年五月创办以来,工厂已发展成为具有机械、电器、电镀等车间的教学、生产、科研三结合的教育革命基地,先后接纳三千多名学生进厂学习和劳动,培养工与读相结合,脑力劳动与体力劳动相结合的一代新人。工厂生产的万用变压器、牵引直流电机等产品运销全国二十四个省、市。学校办学经费已自给有余,并办起了农村分校等教育革命基地,奠定了全面实行半工半读的基础,学校面貌发生了深刻的变化。
