The purpose of this paper is to discuss the political issue of language in cross-cultural communication by commenting on Hu Ying’s book, The Translation Legends. Based on the analysis of several popular female images in the late Qing dynasty, Hu Ying proposed that the new Chinese women were formed in the complex field of Chinese and Western cultures. Among these, the language and political issues involved in translation are highlighted. Post-colonial translation theorists pay more attention to the political issues from the weak language to the strong language, while Hu Ying discusses the cultural, ethical and political issues from strong language to weak language. Through the analysis of beheadings and the combing of different translation practices and theories, this article explores the ethical and political issues facing the translation of different linguistic flows.
