The rules described in this article provide a general (or generic) naming system for the conversion from one organic compound to another. Since 1954, in addition to replacing the system names (1) with substitutions, these processes have been lacking in systematic verbalization. Some processes are named using “person name reactions” (eg, Michael reactions), others using a variety of different, sometimes inconsistent terms, and often even one equation or a rather lengthy multi-word expression. The three common types of conversions are simple substitutions, simple additions and simple elimination. In fact, the first three sets of rules in this article deal with these three types of conversions.
