When the German recession entered the fourth quarter, some companies are taking countermeasures to try and restore the competitiveness of Europe, the largest country. For Germany’s neighbors, the consequences of a recession are staggering. For almost 40 years, Germany has been the locomotive of economic growth in Europe. Its population of 80 million accounts for 23% of European consumers and the economy of 1.8 trillion U.S. dollars accounts for 26% of the GNP of the EC. In addition, political instability, the most important market in Europe, poses the risk of further delaying the implementation of the EC plan of economic and political integration.
