In recent years, academics have different views on Wang Jingwei’s defection and enemy occupation on December 8, 1938. Some think that Wang Jingwei’s national defeatism and the vicious infiltration of capitulationism are the root causes of his defection. Japan’s inducements are the external cause. Chiang Kai-shek Pave the way for Wang Jingwei’s enemy. Others think the main reason is the policy differences between Wang Jingwei and Chiang Kai-shek. Others regard the defection of Wang Jingwei as a public split between pro-Anglo-American faction and pro-Japanese faction within the Kuomintang. I think that Wang Jingwei’s defection was not an accidental and isolated incident. It is the result of the complicated struggle between China and Japan since the war of resistance against Japan, the international relations, and especially the various conflicts in China. The root cause of the defection of Wang Ching-wei lies in the serious development of his political ambitions and his vying leadership with Chiang Kai-shek for the compromise with Japan; the direct cause is Japan’s strategy of inducing deception.
