“僜人”分布在我国西藏自治区东南部有“西藏江南”之称的察隅县境内的额曲、察隅曲、格多曲和杜莱曲流域(“曲”藏语“河”的意思)的中印边界传统边境线中方实际控制线以内的地方。其中额曲是僜人的主要聚居区之一,大约有1300人(2001年统计数)。僜人实际上有“达让”和“格曼”两个居民群体组成。僜人所操的达让语和格曼语均属于汉藏语系藏缅语族。僜人往往是“多语者”,如格曼人除自己的母语外,一般懂达让语,也懂藏语和汉语。
