2004年6月7日-14日,国务院南水北调工程建设委员会办公室会同水利部、国家环保总局有关部门组成南水北调中线工程考察组,由国务院南水北调工程建设委员会办公室主任张基尧带队,对湖北、河南、河北和北京四省(直辖市)南水北调工作进行考察,分别与各省(直辖市)政府进行座谈并交换意见。
