The machinability of P20BSCa pre-hardened plastic mold steel and Swedish 718 steel were compared with the cutting tool wear, cutting resistance and cutting temperature. The cutting mechanism of P20BSCa steel was also studied. The results show that the P20BSCa steel has lower cutting resistance and lower cutting temperature under the same pre-hardened condition. The wear amount of the cutting tool is less than the wear amount of the cutting tool when P20BSCa steel hardness is 35HRC, The reason for its machinability improvement is that the low-strength MnS inclusions in the steel change the toughness and plasticity of the steel and reduce the friction coefficient between the material and the tool edge.
