交响乐之“交响”,是从其乐曲总谱开始的。在作曲家创作的总谱上,已经为构成交响乐的各不相同的每一组乐器(弦乐、木管乐、铜管乐和打击乐)规定了曲谱。任何高明的交响乐队,根据某一种乐器的独奏曲也演奏不出交响乐。拿交响乐中的总谱来比拟电影中的文学剧本,自然不尽恰当。但是,正如同交响乐之“交响”应当从总谱开始一样,作为“综合艺术”的电影,其“综合”亦应从文学剧本开始。因为电影文学剧本是这门综合艺术的全面基础,不是基础的一部分。电影既拥有文学、戏剧、美术、摄影和音乐所具有的表现手段,就应当从建立它的基础——文学剧本的时候,开始把它们综合起来加以运用,同时依据电影语言的特性,使它们变得更加有力,从而为创造银幕形象服务。
