我第一次见到梅先生,是在1947年秋天。当时,夏声戏剧学校迁到上海,我和岳民、谢福惠等十一个同学抱着崇敬的心情,趋访这位名震中外的艺术大师。梅先生在客厅接见我们,当提到刘仲秋、郭建英是我们的校长、教务主任时,梅先生格外高兴,笑着说:“自己人,自己人!”原来,梅先生是他们的老师,尤其郭建英是梅门入室弟子,曾随梅剧团赴美国访问演出。面对我们这批晚辈,梅先生慈祥地询问我们在学什么行当,学过什么戏之后说,培养学生要让他多试几个行当,看哪个行当合适,再有所侧重。这样,可以做到人尽其才,因材施教,同时,允文允武,昆乱不挡,戏路子宽。接着,他又谈到,京剧只要跟着时代不断前进,必定会受到观众的欢迎,前途就是光明的。
