第四纪年代学的研究,可以说是从研究第四纪冰川沉积和建立冰期开始的。早在本世纪初,彭克等(A.Penk and E.Bruckner,1909)根据阿尔卑斯山北坡冰碛地层和相应的阶地的地貌分析,用多瑙河支流名称建立了四个经典冰期和三个间冰期,并从冰川和冰水堆积物的数量,风化程度及切蚀深度等估算了年代的长短。其中以民德-里斯间冰期最长,切蚀的深度到处都很大,估计有24万年。我国也曾以此与之比较过,称为大间冰期。后 Quaternary chronological studies, we can say from the study of Quaternary glacial deposits and the establishment of ice age began.
