五强溪水电站位于沅水下游湖南省沅陵县境内,是一个以发电为主、兼有防洪及航运等综合效益的工程。该电站坝址以上控制流域面积为83,800公里~2,占整个沅水流域面积的93%。流域内雨量充沛,年平均降水量在1,000～1,730毫米,坝址以上年平均降水量为1,724毫米。坝址处多年平均流量为2,050米~3/秒,年水量646亿米~3,主要集中在4～8月,占年水量的69.5%。实测最大流量27,000米~3/秒,实测最小流量198米~3/秒。调查历史最大洪水流量41,700米~3/
