五台山属太行山系,是中国佛教四大名山之一,位于山西省东北部,为汾(河)渭(河)地堑北部高耸的断块山地,因分布有五座顶似平台(北台期夷平面产物)的山峰而得名,其也是北台期夷平面的命名地,保留着典型的夷平面和冰缘地貌。五台山的五座山峰分别是:北台叶斗峰(海拔3 061 m),南台锦绣峰(2 485 m)、东台望海峰(2 795 m)、中台翠岩峰(2 894 m)、西台挂月峰(2 773 m);以雄峙北侧的北台叶斗峰最高,为华北第一高峰,有“华北屋脊”之称。五峰之内称台内,五峰之外称台外,台内以处于台怀盆地的台怀镇为中心。台怀盆地海拔1 600～1 800 m,发源于北台叶斗峰南侧的清水河自北向南由盆地中穿过。
