Apoptosis is a key mechanism responsible for the depletion of CD4 T cells in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected individuals, but little is known about their specific signaling pathways. This study shows that caspase-3-mediated apoptosis accounts for only a small proportion of the death of activated and effectively infected CD4 + T cells. The remaining more than 95% of resting CD4 + T cells are caspase-1-mediated pyroptosis-induced deaths due to abortion virus infection. Pyroptosis is a strongly inflammatory pattern of programmed cell death in which cytoplasmic content and proinflammatory cytokines include interleukin 1 beta
