天竺寺是盛唐时代应北印度来华梵僧阿儞真那之奏请,依照西域建筑制度在龙门石窟建立起来的一座佛教寺院。由于武周以降其与东都上层社会保持有密切的联系,故在中古洛阳地区享誉已久的“龙门十寺”中占有突出的文化地位。然而,除了开元名士苏颋《唐龙门天竺寺碑》有关阿儞真那与该寺相关弘法事迹的早期记载,传世文献对该寺历吏沿革、景观风貌、人事因缘等相关教门遗事颇乏纵深的信息披露。本文着重以近代洛阳地区——尤其是龙门一带——出土的石刻文献为依据,对其中涉及天竺寺的有关资料进行了梳理与剪裁,进而从文化遗产角度对天竺寺中古一代的历史遗踪包括地望形胜、香火传延、僧俗结缘、堂字兴废等相关史地要素给予了力所能及地复原,由此为人们研究“龙门十寺”问题提供了一组具有典型个案意义的文化史数据。
