In “Brown Girl, Brown Brick House”, African-American writer Paula Marshall tries to re-explore the spirit of the place through the juxtaposition of people and places. On the one hand, she acknowledges the importance of place spirit because it is people’s quest for existential meaning, and she highlights, inter alia, the exploration of the spirit of locales by Barbados-Americans with discrete backgrounds, especially through the experience of the savvy black girl, ; On the other hand, she questioned the spirit of a single, closed and still place, revealing the complexity of the place by the experience of hostess Selena in different places (including experiences in brown brick houses, factories, apartments, etc.) Change, and through Selena’s approval of the street as a place to show her desire for open space, but also hope to participate in the manufacture of the spirit of the place. Barbados-Americans are also writing new identities, identities that are also in change and construction, in creating a new place to be.
