Hundreds of tons of particles produced by the manufacturing industry that are visible under the microscope each year enter the environment, yet little is known about the biological effects they cause. A study of very fine particles of titanium dioxide (TiO 2, mainly used in manufacturing and food production and as a drug carrier) now shows that these substances are also capable of producing harmful free radicals in brain cells at low concentrations . The researchers point out that this finding underscores the need for more research on the interaction of such particles with living tissue.
