Evaporative cooling is a cooling technique that is used primarily for traction converters. Evaporative cooling components inside the natural circulation of coolant, the external use of ventilation cooling. The components are cast aluminum and are extremely robust for the most demanding ambient conditions. By the end of the 1980s, more than 3,300 evaporative cooling modules were in use or already ordered. Their use in high-power GTO converters shows particular advantages. A typical application example is the converter of the Type 401 (ICE) EMU in the German DB Railway. Despite the fact that the coolant R113 used is currently the most controversial fluorocarbon, evaporative cooling will remain a reliable technology that is environmentally friendly.
