Although H.264 / AVC is promised to have higher coding efficiency than existing video coding standards, it still presents tremendous engineering challenges for system architects, DSP engineers and hardware designers. The H.264 / AVC standard introduces most of the major changes and algorithmic discontinuities that have emerged in the evolution of video coding standards since H.261 was introduced in 1990. Implementation of H.264 /
