The authors established a method for determining the content of paeonol, a volatile component in peony bark soup, using Amberlite XAD-2 resin. The method was used to study the compatibility of 46 medicinal herbs with peony bark and boiling peony. Influenced by the leaching of phenols, these herbs are components of 19 Chinese herbal formulas containing moutan. Experimental materials: The shredded Chinese herbal medicines were purchased from Koike, Nakai, Japan. Dichloromethane was used as the mobile phase, and the pheral phenol was separated from the chloroform extract of Cortex Moutan by silica gel column, and then recrystallized from dichloromethane-methanol.
