European settlers who came to China in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries often accompanied their families. Family members’ diaries and letters seem to be a useful source of information that gives a vivid insight into daily colonial experiences. Walther Frey was a prominent architect in China between 1905 and 1938 and was the backbone of the German community in 1914 in Tianjin. His sister, Elisabeth Frey, visited China in 1913-1914 and wrote a series of letters to her mother in Germany. From the very beginning, these letters were consciously used as a diary to reveal the many ambiguities of colonial experiences abroad. They not only describe the colonial experiences of a young woman in China early in the twentieth century, but also elaborate on Colonization. At the same time, these letters clearly demonstrate the limitations of relying on such information.
