在墨西哥的国旗和国徽上都有这样一幅图案:一只勇猛的兀鹰口衔一条蛇傲立于一棵茁壮的仙人掌上。这就是传说中1 3世纪以前古印第安阿兹台克人在其信奉的战神指引下走到特斯科科湖的一个岛上时所看到的情景。“墨西哥”一词便出自阿兹台克民族战神的别名“墨西卡利”。
